Forum: GratefulDead Subject: MP3 Loading Question from Mac

OK, techies, wake up! I know it's only something a.m. on your side of the globe. But just in case ...

Got a befuddling question here. My son just got a Sansa MP3 Clip Plus (you know, the cheap kind that, if kids lose them, it's OK) and wants to load music on it for a trip we're going on tomorrow/Friday. He's good tech-wise, and I at least know my own iPod (kinda sorta), but this is stumping us. This is his first MP3 player. Have googled with no luck.

Here's the thing. He/we are following the (rather limited) directions for loading to the Sansa MP3 using a Mac, but once he does the drag-n-drop thing, it doesn't register. It's in the folder thing, but not on the MP3. This is the case for stuff he's trying to load from disc, too, not just the iTunes (which I gather might not be readable for some reason on the MP3.)

I'm thinking it might need to sync, but there's no little window that pops or anything, like with an iPod, that says to sync. Can't find any online directions.

Grrrrr aaaargh. (That's the sound both for looking for online directions and for trying to work with a young teen on this. "Let me try this." "No, let ME try!" "I think you need to ..." "NOOOO, mom, it says blah blah." "Yes, I KNOW. Let me ..." "No, let ME ..." Grrrr aaargh.)

Has anyone used one of those things? Particularly with a Mac?

(It's in a good cause. He's trying to load some of my GD, too. Best comment of the day: He asked for some discs to try to load, and I asked which ones, and he said, "Oh, they're all good." Right answer, right answer.)

I don't have a Sandisc but I have a Insignia player and I had the same problem.

I had to load my music inot seperate forlders and then drop them on the player icon. I couldn't use iTunes for anything except to play the music.

The other thing I had an issue with was you HAVE TO USE EJECT by right clicking before you unplug or it won't take.

Good Luck!!!

Well, that's what Good Mommy is doing now ... though using my PC. He tried all afternoon on his Mac with no luck, so persistance paid off, and now I'll spend the evening clicking, dragging and ripping. I experimented and found I could drag folders from my hard drive (though not from iTunes) to the MP3. Since all I have on my hard drive, literally, is GD plus a bit of JGB and Phil, he now has several nice shows :-)

Alternately I can take a CD he wants, rip it to my hard drive, and then load it. Can't do it directly from iTunes, though. So I've ripped Abbey Road and CCR and am doing some classical now. Got a stack of music here. He pops in periodically to say "don't you DARE sneak in any Doors!" (Which I like and he hates with a passion.)

Btw turns out that with Sansa, you don't need to eject from PC. Spent a bunch of time puzzling THAT out, too. Oh I'm just so techie. Not.

edit: Whoops, forgot I'm not officially Mommy anymore. It's gone to Mom. Such an adjustment ...

Seems like you are not the only one to have this issue. I found this thread in the macworld website about this issue, seems to have a few potential solutions, hope it helps.

Here is another one from Sandisc:

Yeah, the last link is one we've tried. Can get it to recognize, can do the drag and drop, but then it still doesn't have the files ... a problem mentioned in the other thread! Thanks. Will keep trying, and if nothing is working, sheesh, I may let him try to load from my PC. Which is actually a Forbidden Zone to The Kid. (Give 'em an inch, they'll start loading games ... and next thing you know, my music will be colonized by space marines and only playable with light sabers or something ...)

If the music is from CD's he's loaded into iTunes or music he bought through iTunes, it may have been converted into AAC/MP4 format, not MP3. If so, anything other than an iPod may not be able to read it. This could be completely wrong, but may be worth a try. Check the file type in iTunes. You may be able to convert AAC files to MP3, if so give it a shot. I know you can convert MP3 to AAC easily enought, not sure of the other way around. You can check this link (also SanDisk)
